Perchè Porto Frailis? Why Porto Frailis?

It is the question I hear time and again, ever since I chose to linger here awhile. After wandering far and wide across Sardinia, I came to realise I had found the perfect place to reshape my life into a sanctuary of nature and creativity.

I.D.R.

Even many of my Sardinian friends are strangers to this little world, suspended between Tortolì and Arbatax. Here, low-built houses are nestled among gardens in full bloom, amidst a lush tapestry of eucalyptus, pine, juniper, cork oak, mastic trees, and, of course, ancient wild olives, all mirroring a landscape that slopes gently down towards the sea.

As September draws to a close, a domestic harvest of strawberry grapes takes place within these gardens. From this, vino cotto is lovingly crafted—a cooked wine destined for winter delicacies, the traditional dolci di sapa.

In Erminia’s beautiful garden, under the shade of a treasured Greek myrtle, I listen to ninety-two-year-old Assuntina. She speaks of her life and of a long-ago devotion she has never forgotten: the cultivation of tobacco. The leaves, she tells me, were left to dry inside the workers' homes, before being strung onto delicate cords in the very space that has now become the Church of the Sacred Heart.

F.D.R.

Generations of women and young girls lived their lives entwined with tobacco until the 1970s, when the paper mill arrived and everything changed. As agriculture and fishing were left behind, thousands began to work within the immense factory. Tortolì transformed into a bustling town, reshaped by the influx of workers from neighbouring villages, whilst merchant ships began to gather in the small port of Arbatax.

As I gaze upon Assuntina’s beautiful face, a shadow falls over her eyes when she recounts those years. Just as their newfound prosperity felt as though it would last forever, a shifting tide of political and economic forces culminated in bankruptcy, and the mill fell silent in the 1970s.

Beneath the shade of a tangled canopy of branches, leaves, and blossoms, the conversation flows with spirited warmth. Erminia chooses instead to dwell upon the days of her childhood, when the wives of the Ponzese fishermen would walk all the way from Arbatax on foot, balancing large baskets upon their heads, brimming with the day's catch to sell.

People would journey to Orrì on foot as well, for the festival of Sant'Anna. There, they slept in makeshift huts fashioned from reeds, while the men sang the traditional mutetusu. They would feast on culurgiones brought from home, dancing together in pure, lighthearted joy.

The breeze stirs the leaves and awakens the scents of the garden, as the blossoms gently cradle our voices. Once more, this is a gathering of women, welcoming one another with an open heart and a shared desire to truly connect; their life stories broaden the horizons of awareness, offering mirrors through which to reflect upon our own journeys.

In Porto Frailis, I live in a little turret, where I drift to sleep and awaken to the sight of the Arbatax lighthouse, perfectly framed by the window before my bed.

It is my reference point the day begins, and my space for reflection before sleep. This morning, everything feels effortlessly simple—like waking wrapped in a rose-tinted sky, capturing a photograph, and catching the sudden flight of a seagull.

***

From the terrace of my house, the sunsets are equally spectacular; I lose myself in the colours of Nature’s tableaux vivants painted across the sky above the farm, where, in springtime, the orange groves scent the air right up to my windows.

Then, there are those sunsets where I stand transfixed, watching the drama unfold across the sky. As a cloud-gazer, I read messages within the celestial shapes; I am not alone in deciphering them, for anyone who loves to watch the heavens will always find the messages they seek.

And lastly, those extraordinary twilights that culminate in breathtaking sunsets, where the emotion is so profound and exhilarating that you find yourself wishing they would never end.

***

I stroll along the main road leading to the little bay of Porto Frailis—a tiny jewel box where the sky is ever-changing, and on certain days, the clouds seem to gently skim the sea.

Sometimes, when the wind blows wild, I could spend hours simply watching it play with the sea.

Then at evening-tide, as a stillness settles over the little bay, the rose of the sunset washes over the water too.

***

On opposite sides of the bay sit two incomparable terraces. On one hand, there is the terrace of Hotel La Bitta, where I go to write during the lingering warmth of these Ogliastran autumn afternoons, watching the day’s last swimmers whilst savouring the exquisite little treats crafted by the hotel chef.

On the opposite side lies the terrace of Acquachiara, where the sunsets turn to gold, and the nights are spun sweet with music and aperitifs.

***

Before returning home, I stop by to visit a friend who has lived for twenty years just outside the entrance of Hotel La Bitta. In truth, this ancient olive tree is nearly four hundred years old, though he was brought to live here in the late nineties. They severely pruned his canopy, but thankfully, he survived the journey. His majestic trunk conceals a little secret, whispered only to those who know how to speak with him.

***

Alberi, alberi.

Trees, trees. My passion for them often draws me to wander through the Sughereta, the woodland garden just below my home, where young cork oaks mingle with centuries-old trees. The most majestic among them stand in the plot next to the garden, just beyond the boundary wall.

Among these trees are two friends I visit often; the first is a muscular giant. I sit beside him and allow my mind to empty of all thought, until a complete silence settles within me. It is in that very moment that peace transforms into joy. Before leaving his side, I always embrace him with gratitude.

The other tree resembles a great, somewhat melancholy bird; yet all around him wanders a lively, feathered community, forever chattering and quacking.

As I get to know them, I gradually discover their names; one only has to watch them closely. Teddy Boy and Lucy are sweethearts, utterly inseparable, whilst Barchetta—the beauty of the pond—follows them wherever they go.

Then there is the masked brigade—the bullies of the pond. They refuse to let any of the mallards near the scraps of food I occasionally bring to the water, and if anyone dares try, they snap their beaks onto the tail of the unfortunate soul, who attempts to flee in vain. The only one they fear, the only one who fights back, is Barchetta—the Mandarin duck, princess of the little lake.

At sunset, as the garden empties, the world falls silent and life slows its pulse within the golden reflections of the water.

***

From the beach of Porto Frailis, a scenic walk through the greenery—with the sea never leaving my sight—leads me to the tower known as Taratasciàr, an Arabic name meaning ‘the thirteenth tower’.

From there, I make my way to the Belvedere, and with just a few more steps, I reach the tiny church of San Gemiliano.

***

Just a few minutes from home lies another beach with an exotic name: Basaura, with the stress falling upon the ‘u’. I decide to head there to catch a glimpse of the sea before darkness falls.

Walking along the sand, I breathe in the salty air and cross paths with a young man and his affectionate Labrador. Everything feels peaceful, yet something is about to unfold.

I can scarcely believe my eyes. I turn towards the young man, who stands as motionless as his dog; we exchange a brief, astonished glance. My only thought is that this is the most breathtaking sunset I have ever witnessed—the sea has turned to liquid fire.

When it all fades away as if by magic, my stomach is in knots. I return to the car and sit motionless for a short while, just to catch my breath. Before me, the beach is now dark and deserted; the whole spectacle unfolded in a mere ten minutes and already feels like a dream. As the amber streetlight flickers to life in the square where I am parked, darkness takes hold. I drive away.

***

From Porto Frailis, a few short minutes bring me to the port of Arbatax, where yet another world unfolds. Running alongside the little harbour are the tracks of the Trenino Verde railway—a historic gateway that, for over a hundred and thirty years, has connected the rugged heart of Sardinia to its coast.

I sit at the little tables of the bar upon the pier, watching the ducks as they splash within the rose-tinted reflections of the sunset, whilst high above the village, the pine forest cradling the church slowly shifts its colours. I love the feeling of being nestled among boats of every shape and size; I have always dreamed of living upon the water.

***

As I ascend towards the crest of the village, jagged porphyry rocks emerge from the greenery, shaping themselves into enchanting botanical gardens.

***

During one of my explorations, I follow a hidden path that leads northwards from the shipyard. Crossing a small iron bridge, it skirts a long, sandy beach on one side and a canal on the other.

It is here, at the very end of the road, that I stumble upon the Fishermen’s Co-operative and the wonderful Ponente kiosk—a delightful surprise where the fishermen cook their freshest catch, serving it straight to tables overlooking the sea.

I.D.R.

The name ‘Oyster Bar’ highlights the true specialty of the place: oysters, cultivated in the local fishponds and exported across the globe. I shall certainly return, if only to indulge once more in their exquisite fritto misto.

I.D.R.

Today, along that very same road, I was left utterly spellbound by an enormous flock of black ducks, resting upon the channel’s floats—perchance taking pause during their long migration. I could not tear my eyes away until, all at once, they took flight as one, vanishing into the far horizon.

A world apart—free and wild—that for a single moment crossed paths with my own, bringing a rush of emotion. For within them, I saw a reflection of my deepest yearning: to live just like that, as a wanderer of the world.

The sunset arrives all at once, unveiling a spectacle that leaves me utterly breathless.

***

Today is one of those clouded days, when I cannot seem to focus my thoughts, leaving them suspended in the void. As I walk along the long stretch of sand facing the channel—the one they call the paper mill beach—my thoughts begin to shape into words.

Giorni lunghi

senza orizzonte

Al capezzale dell’onda

un velo sottile di sposa

avvolge la memoria

Dove sono?

Cosa c’è al di là del niente?

Long days

with no horizon

At the wave’s bedside

a bride’s thin veil

shrouds the memory

Where am I?

What lies beyond the void?

Eppure un suono risveglia

il respiro intorpidito

Ponte

Passaggio

Arcobaleno

Un richiamo scavalca la cortina

di vapori nebulosi

Nella pineta un cuculo

Vita fervente

che si nutre d’aria

ripete all’infinito

Cucuuuu Cù Cucuuuu Cù

Sono tornata! Gli rispondo.

Yet a sound awakens

the slumbering breath

Bridge

Passage

Rainbow

A call leaps over the tapestry

of misty vapours

In the pine forest, a cuckoo

Fervent life

nourished by the air

repeats without end

Cuckoo-Coo Cuckoo-Coo

‘I am back!’ I answer him.

***

I often go for walks in the magnificent pine forest that skirts the channel on one side, and the long stretch of S’Isula Manna beach on the other.

Around the pond, I walk amidst the calls and sudden flights of a multitude of birds: little egrets, seagulls, cormorants, kingfishers, and even herons.

***

From Porto Frailis, a short journey leads me to the countless bays that follow one after the other from Tortolì down to Bari Sardo. Their presence is marked by signs along a road that winds through the countryside and amidst groves of eucalyptus. The first is Orrì. It appears empty of people yet rich with new blossoms in this still-mild January; the flowerbeds upon the sand already gleam with the tiny yellow flowers of wild clover. It is an early spring—made all the more wondrous as I receive photographs and messages from many friends, not only in Italy, who are shivering behind walls of snow.

***

Venturing beyond Orrì, many other beaches await, including Il Golfetto and Foxilioni—where I always enjoy an exquisite salmon carpaccio.

Yet the beach closest to my heart—the one I call ‘Paradise Forever’—is Cea, the final bay disputed between the communes of Tortolì and Bari Sardo. Many say this beach is magical, and it does not surprise me; at Cea, there is always something extraordinary in the air.

Today, high above, someone is watching over me.

I linger until sunset, when Cea dissolves into a watercolour of soft pastel hues.

The sand breathes, free from human clutter

The sea, this placid sea, wide-opens infinite eyes

The sky fills me, I float weightless.

It is the only world I know

The only world that has ever been

><

Ogliastran autumns are the finest time to embrace the sea. Right here, last October, I would immerse myself within the ‘sacred waters of Cea’. The sea, still basking in the warmth of summer, the beach entirely deserted—priceless privileges.

***

Last but not least, the mountains of Ogliastra, where I go to wander through the still-wild heart of Sardinia and to breathe in the absolute void.

><

There is yet another jewel within this region, a mere twenty-minute drive away: Santa Maria Navarrese, the sole hamlet of the commune of Baunei.

Here, a cluster of beautiful elements gathers within the heart of the small village, ensuring that wherever one turns, continuous emotions unfold.

A rush of excitement sweeps over me as I draw near to the millennial olive tree standing beside the little church of Santa Maria Navarrese. This feeling deepens even more as I watch the fortunate children playing in the public gardens, nestled amidst these wondrous, centuries-old giants.

Towards evening, I ascend to the very top of the village, reaching the mythic terrace where one feels suspended above the clouds. Savouring the chef’s delicacies, I am immersed in the stirring twilight of this beautiful day; from up here, sea and sky, merged in the same pastel hues, seem infinite.

Perchè Porto Frailis?

Why Porto Frailis?

Filastrofa della contentezza

Oggi il mare

ha tessuto una trina

Cucito insieme

nel ricamo di schiuma

il cielo e le onde

Sospesa leggera

in stallo nel vento

con sguardo di sale

respiro il momento

Poi plano sull'acqua

che spruzza la faccia

Mi immergo nel suono

del mondo marino

Un pesce divento

che guizza contento

Rhymestanza of Contentment

Today the sea

has woven a lace

Sewn together

in the embroidery of foam

the sky and the waves

Suspended so light

at a standstill in the wind

with a salt gaze

I breathe the moment

Then I glide on the water

that splashes my face

I dive in the sound

of the marine world

A fish I become

that darts blissful
