Camminare in libertà Walking in Freedom

Too many echoes of excess words reach me from the world, crowding my ears; it is time to escape in search of emptiness and silence.

From Arbatax I head north, leaving the coast behind to climb into the heart of the region. Even Miss GPS, the petulant voice of the navigator, has been silenced; today more than ever I rely on instinct to find a remote place where I can walk in freedom.

At the Talana junction I keep straight, with no idea where I will end up, but that is the beauty of it.

I am traveling through a land where cork oaks are the true protagonists, and along the roadside, a tree appears that seems to open its belly to the birth of an Alien. Yet it does not look diseased; I stop to look closer, for trees never cease to amaze me.

High above, overlooked by a rocky mountain, lies a village. What immense richness there is in this Ogliastra, where just thirty kilometers from the coast you can land on another planet with a sharp-sounding name: Urzulei.

The village is deserted, slumbering in its afternoon nap; I drive on until a dirt road opens up toward the mountains.

In the emptiness that surrounds me, a gate stands out, flanked by a beautiful plant I do not recognize. I park the car while wondering who could have built a villa in such a solitary place; the garden looks enormous and lush, and I would love to visit it.

I set out on the white dirt road, which then becomes a barely visible trail, scrambling up the scree slopes until I reach a small plateau where two trees stand tall, laden with fruit. The sheer amount of fruit gathered on the ground around the trunk suggests that no one looks after them.

What a pleasure to pick the last sugary figs and the first tiny persimmons, still firm yet already so sweet. The landscape surrounding my small, solitary Eden is breathtaking; it must be the Supramonte of Urzulei, matching its peaks against the moving sky on the horizon. The clouds travel fast, the wind blows hard up there, but down here, calm reigns supreme.

One step after another until the mind empties; we walk with a lightness of being when we fling open the door to freedom. The anxiety-inducing echoes of civilization dissolve into the healing energy of nature; now I breathe, feeling life flow within and around me.

You are right, Leonida, in your letter from the other side of the world and of time, when you write: "Learning to feel is the great school of nature". Who can feel more than you, living immersed in the heart of the Amazon rainforest.

I return to where I parked; a small car is stationary in front of the open gate. I call out several times, and a distant, slightly irritated voice answers; I ask if I may come in.

The garden rises in terraces toward the top of the hill. The vegetation-covered walls supporting the gate are actually only a few meters long; there is no house at all in this surprising place. I make my way among plants of all kinds arranged in a beautiful composition; the voice that told me to enter belongs to a man who appears a bit amazed by my alien presence in a place so far from everything. He holds a bucket filled with tiny wild apples that he must have just gathered.

We walk together, his name is Mario, and it took him thirty years to create his garden. We review each plant, and he tells me the names of those I do not know; they arrived here from many parts of Sardinia, and beyond. The quinces are large and ready to be harvested, while the beautiful, unknown plant next to the gate is called Platina Mora.

We chat about this territory, about life in Urzulei, and about the surrounding mountains; that high peak over there is Mount Usulei.

We share the same passion for plants, and instinct could only have brought me here, into the small kingdom of a passionate gardener. In the end, I realize I have taken very few photos, too caught up in looking, but I will return, another time.

That is what I tell Mario as we say goodbye.

I drive off again in search of a place where I can prop my feet on the dashboard and close my eyes for a while.

I open them again onto the rugged rocky landscape that speaks of the world of shepherds; not far away, three little goats look back at me intently.

I approach slowly, the silence is absolute, and the four of us seem to be the only inhabitants of the planet. They stare at me, and in an attempt to communicate with them somehow, I improvise a little song that echoes through the emptiness; despite my poor singing skills, they seem to listen with curiosity, motionless, their ears alert. I am sure that my voice conveys who I am far better than any words ever could.

Priceless Freedom.

To sing at the top of my lungs, to nap inside a car, to pick fruit from the trees, to wander aimlessly and without time limits, as if I were never to return.

I am not afraid to seek this freedom in nature wherever I am, because living in the moment, without fears and expectations, without past and without future, makes me feel entirely happy and in harmony with the universe.

On the horizon, the sun is going down, promising a spectacular sunset; I take the road back home, and as I draw closer to the coast, the landscape changes, turning gentler.

The light sets the rocks ablaze, the prickly pears laden with fruit stand as the symbol of Ogliastra’s abundance, this strip of Sardinian land where summer still lingers, languidly, in a warm and sunny October.

Along the road back home, many olive trees are surrounded by groups of people spreading nets all around them. Ancient gestures.

This is the moment when every family prepares for the olive and grape harvest; unusual fruits that grow only here appear in the shops, and the small shopkeepers say with pride: What I sell is grown here... it is raised here.

One last glance at the wild and silent world I have just left behind: a divine light pierces the dark clouds, casting its rays across the mist-shrouded ridges. The sky evokes a sense of sacredness and the absolute, the grand finale of a perfect day upon which night will soon fall.

Continui a stupirmi!
