Un'aura antica di magia An Ancient Aura of Magic
I travel through the cultivated countryside leading from Tortolì to Lanusei, lit up here and there by the bright orange patches of trees heavy with citrus fruit. The dazzling, vivid green of the newborn grass shimmers beneath blooming mimosa trees and almond branches snowed under with blossoms; animals graze peacefully, embraced by a lush vegetation. For days, spring has been shining resplendent in Ogliastra, brightening everything with hope.

I stop to ask for directions from a woman gathering something by the roadside. She points the way, catching my eyes lingering on the bundle of wild asparagus in her hand: "This way I walk, and tonight I'll eat s'arbarau," she says with a smile. It is a peaceful Saturday afternoon of foraging for her; I, instead, am on my way to visit a small Ogliastra village nestled upon the southern slopes of the Gennargentu: Ilbono. A faded sign catches my attention—yes, it truly reads Nuraghe, pointing toward a dirt road that winds into the fields. Unpaved roads hold an irresistible pull over me; I will make a short detour to see where it leads. Once again, instinct has served me well, because after a brief drive, I find myself in a place that leaves me utterly breathless.
I cannot help but walk through this vast and joyful profusion of gold, careful not to step on the flowers, gently brushing their blossoms with my hands. The intense, fragrant scent wrapping around me is an embrace, a gift, a healing balm for every wound.
As I move forward, the vision is enriched by another enchanting element: at the far end of the immense flowery carpet, hidden behind a row of olive trees, the nuraghe comes into view.

I head in that direction through the olive grove; I love olive trees, as sacred to me as they were to the ancients—symbols of peace, descendants of the very first olive tree in the world, planted by Athena.
The ancients were wiser than we are; not only was it forbidden to burn their wood, but anyone who harmed them faced severe punishment.
There before me, at the center of the scene, stands a magnificent specimen with a grand, silvery canopy. I draw closer.

It is an ancient olive tree, its massive, wrinkled trunk half-hidden by a waterfall of branches; I walk all around it.

From this angle, it seems split in half—a fork of two parts facing each other, perhaps struck by lightning. It must have been in this very way that a tree first gave fire to humankind; and there is more, a detail that catches the eye.

Something can be glimpsed inside the trunk; I draw even closer.

Yes, this olive tree has a face—two, in fact, facing each other in the perfect metaphor of a forced separation eternally denied any reunion. So many myths, fairy tales, and legends have been inspired by trees; I wish I could know the secret history of the one standing before me.
Suddenly, a phrase by Hermann Hesse comes to mind: "Trees are sanctuaries. Whoever knows how to speak to them, whoever knows how to listen to them, can learn the truth."
Mulling over these thoughts, I continue my walk toward the nuraghe.

It is built upon a granitic crag and must stand roughly five meters high.
Just like the other seven thousand nuraghes across Sardinia, this prehistoric fortress-home is constructed by layering stones, without any use of mortar.

This territory is imbued with an ancient aura of magic; rocks and plants weave together an enchanted setting where, five thousand years ago, a community frequented these natural parlors, sitting on stones softened by moss and practicing the cult of the dead; or perhaps, as legend tells and as Grazia Deledda writes in her Reeds in the Wind: "...during the day, the dwarfs and the janas, tiny fairies, stay in their rock homes, weaving golden fabrics on golden looms."

I wander around, breathing in this beauty with profound respect and a powerful sense of being a guest in someone else’s home, watched by invisible eyes

I love stones; I see them as natural entities laden with initiatory codes. For millions of years, within these stones—inhabited, like all of nature, by arcane forces and energies—we have sought an alchemical projection of our own soul.

Tiny doors, passageways, crevices in the rock—everything speaks of shelter, home, and tomb.

Here, plants grow lush, adapting to the stone and creating natural compositions where the synergy of shapes enchants and brings serenity.

I raise my eyes toward a cluster of rocks, and once again, I decipher something.

Could that be a sleeping face I see up there?
There are many ancient presences crystallized in the magic of this place.
