Purtroppo la penuria di acqua nei laghi dovuta alla siccità ha causato lo spostamento di migliaia di cormorani nelle acquaculture e alcune regioni italiane hanno autorizzato un numero limitato di abbattimenti per rispondere alle richieste di pescatori e allevatori, ma uno studio pubblicato nel 2013 dimostra che non ci sono sostanziali differenze nei tassi di crescita della popolazione dei cormorani tra le aree dove erano stati effettuati gli abbattimenti e quelle dove invece non si erano verificati.
