For three days now, I have been sheltered in Fonni, a thousand metres above the forty-degree heat of the coast and the frenetic holiday roar of mid-August. At long last, I can write with a fluid, effortless rhythm, stepping outside only at sunset. I photograph the murals, observe the threads of a still-vibrant tradition, sip an aperitif at the Bar Centrale, and finally dine beneath the pergola of Sa Orte.

Today, however, adventure calls to me, and I decide to emerge from my Barbagia hideaway to explore the surroundings; I shall head to Gavoi, taking the longest road. The reason behind this choice relies solely upon that irrational pulse known as instinct—it cannot be explained, for it does not belong to the mind.

Halfway along my journey lies a tiny village called Lodìne, welcoming me with the best little market in the world.

I choose a tiny handbag and ask for the price, speaking with the littlest shopkeeper of them all. She asks for one euro, but I offer an extra one if they will allow me to take their photograph. It is a wonderful little group, watched over by one of the fathers, whom I ask to translate the text written upon the wall.

The mural tells of the industry that made Lodine famous throughout Sardinia: the production of bricks and tiles, sas teulas, where the men would carry the clay to the kilns and the women crafted the finished pieces.

I leave this vibrant brigade behind to make my way back up towards the historic heart of the village.

Art breathes within the narrow alleys, alive with numerous murals and magnificent black-and-white photographs whose subjects—dressed by Antonio Marras and captured by Salvatore Ligios—are all residents of Lodine. To complete this collaborative project, a writer, Flavio Soriga, was invited to weave stories with the characters from the photographs as his protagonists

And so, I stroll, I observe, I photograph, until I reach a little square where a house stands smiling. Yes, indeed—there are houses so open to life that they truly seem to smile at those who pass by

I wait for the woman on the terrace to step back inside before I take the shot; at that very instant, something stirs inside my blouse. Undeniably an insect—I catch a glimpse of it beneath the light fabric of my sleeve and, on impulse, I do the least sensible thing: I swat it with my free hand. In a panic greater than my own, the creature naturally stings me. An excruciating pain. I pull back the fabric to find it was a wasp, now crumpled upon itself. Looking up, I approach the house I was just photographing and call out to the woman I had seen moments before.

And that is how I met Annetta.

Straight away, she applies a soothing ointment to the sting and invites me to sit upon her little terrace.

It is effortless to talk with this intelligent, warm-hearted woman, who spent years working ‘on the mainland’ and lived another lifetime in Germany. Hers is an open mind, capable of gently defying the somewhat rigid mentality of the village with irony. Her children soon join us, kindly offering to guide me on a walk to discover the secrets of Lodine.

At the very top of the village stands the sixteenth-century church of San Giorgio Martire; from there, the view sweeps over Lake Gusana, revealing how Lodine is nestled upon a high plateau, surrounded by dense forests, natural granite monuments, and freshwater springs. We are at nine hundred metres, and not far away lie the remains of the nuraghe de sas Trintas Battaglias.

Later on, I shall head down to the shores of the lake, where the meadows reach the very edge of the water, and one can bathe within its cool, verdant depths.

My guides are visibly in love with their land, and among the tales they share, fleeting glimpses of their childhood emerge.

Gregorio has a truly captivating smile, whilst Giovanni is an inexhaustible fountain of stories and anecdotes. This is the most precious kind of culture—for it springs from a passion for life and from that curiosity shared by all intelligent minds.

I accepted the invitation to lunch; the conversation flows lively and engaging, the children melt my heart, and casting my eyes over this beautiful family gathered around the laden table, I realise that, once again, nothing has happened by chance.

In a moment of our history, the very one we are living through, where injustice and cruelty seem to hold sway like never before, today I met human beings capable of opening the doors of their home to a traveller. These are people who raise no barriers; on the contrary, they have torn down their walls, or perhaps they never had them at all, for they were born free and free they shall always remain.

A priceless message of hope within this tiny, lesser-known village called Lodìne—with the stress falling upon the ‘i’—a little jewel nestled between Fonni and Gavoi

Intenso, quasi commovente!
