In Guspini, my yellow-orange refuge has a small balcony inhabited by succulents, where yesterday evening I watched the first lunar eclipse of 2020. The Full Wolf Moon entered the Earth's penumbral shadow, darkening slightly for a couple of hours, before resuming its luminescence, when I seemed to see vibrant, multicolored circles vibrating around it.

This morning, however, the sun streaming through the window lights up my bed; I slip on my sunglasses, glance at the orange and lemon trees heavy with fruit surrounding the house, and look at the wonderful homemade tart left by Annalù on the kitchen table. I am ready for a highly anticipated visit: the centuries-old juniper of Pistis and its singular history.
The road stretches straight and fast ahead; I glide past vast meadows of tender green and fields where tractors and farmers are tilling the soil.
Arriving in Pistis, I stop in a large parking area; before me rise the high dunes, partly carpeted in wild scrub, while on the horizon stands the Torre dei Corsari.

I ask a group of people basking in the sun for directions to the juniper; unfortunately, the road collapsed during last month's heavy rains. I could go on foot along a rugged path cutting through the great sand dunes, or by car, but one must know the winding route.
We talk for a while about Sardinia's ancient trees, and one of them offers to join me in the car to show me the way; in return, I will drive him home afterward.
I accept, and through a labyrinthine drive, a stretch of dirt track, and a final walk, we reach our destination.

In front of the luminous horizon of bush and sea, here I am, at what is called "The poet's house", in the center the surprising Secular Juniper.

It is deeply moving to touch it and gaze upon it from every side. Some of its branches rest all the way against the ground, stretching far and wide. Franco, thanks to whom I managed to reach this place, explains that a few days ago he came here with others from the neighborhood to tidy up the area, and he begins to tell me its history. Meanwhile, the juniper, strong and invincible, watches us imperturbably; as the sun sets, it clothes itself in light to celebrate the end of yet another day in its immensely long life.
Many years ago, Efisio Sanna, a former miner who had worked in Montevecchio and was both a poet and a nature enthusiast, adopted this juniper, spending countless hours writing and reflecting beneath its immense, sheltering canopy. However, someone threatened the juniper, wanting to cut it down for firewood. So Efisio, along with his partner Orlanda, decided to transform the tree into a home, where they could guard their old friend. They made use of whatever nature provided: the roof was the woven crown of the tree intertwined with helichrysum branches, while stones served as a floor, and Efisio's poems hung gently from the boughs. The place held a magic that drew people in; many would come to visit the couple and the juniper, often singing Efisio’s verses late into the night. In the juniper's immensely long life, that was a golden era; other poets also began to visit, leaving their own verses behind, until, tragically, Efisio passed away.
The house was destroyed by vandals, and some of the tree's branches were severed.
Today, a law safeguards monumental trees, and the juniper is protected; new keepers now tend to the place, which is frequently visited by locals, tourists, and travelers alike.
Of all Efisio's poems, only one remains, written upon a business envelope and left inside the mailbox he had fastened beside the juniper.
Poesia per l'Albero
Orlanda Sassu - Efisio Sanna 1980
Come rondine puntuale son tornato
Ah nido incomparabile
Figura del creato
Quanta tenerezza infondi mio cuore
Quanta umiltà mi insegni
Quanto amore
Poem for the Tree
Orlanda Sassu - Efisio Sanna 1980
Like a punctual swallow I have returned
To dwell within you, my beloved nest
Still deeply immersed in sleep I found you
Dreaming in this oasis of peace and rest.
Lightly my footstep has trodden upon you
Mindful not to disturb your gentle sleep
But at my appearance you awakened
As if an anxious vigil you did keep
To my heart you pressed close and I kissed you
With all the love my heart could ever give
From above the moon looked down and
Seeing my face impearled with tears
Moved, she leaned closer and smiled away my fears
Ah, incomparable nest
Image of creation
What tenderness you instill within my heart
What humility you teach me
What love
Grazie Efisio e Orlanda!
Reluctantly, I steal away from the juniper; the air has grown crisp, and the sun casts its final ray across the horizon, while on the opposite side, a great crimson moon begins to rise. I bring this beautiful day to a close, chatting over a glass of wine and an excellent pecorino drizzled with cistus honey.
Thank you, Efisio and Orlanda!
