Il giardino dei giganti - The garden of the giants
Sulla strada per Cagliari, la passione per gli alberi mi conduce a S’Ortu Mannu, a Villamassargia, dodici ettari di ulivi secolari e plurisecolari, dove convivono centinaia di patriarchi, tra cui uno millenario, Sa Reina, la Regina.
Prima ancora di arrivare al recinto che racchiude l'albero più prezioso del parco, al di là di un cancelletto di legno, si rivela la visione di un uliveto immenso, immerso nello scenario di un prato morbido e un cielo luminoso.
On the road to Cagliari, the passion for the trees leads me to S'Ortu Mannu, in Villamassargia; twelve hectares of centuries-old olive trees, where hundreds of patriarchs coexist, including one thousands of years old: Sa Reina, the Queen.
Even before reaching the fence that encloses the most precious tree in the park, beyond a wooden gate, the vision of an immense olive grove is revealed, immersed in the scenery of a soft lawn and a bright sky.
Emoziona essere qui, nel territorio di una storia antica, dove questi alberi hanno visto susseguirsi nel tempo, il passaggio di tanti come me. Quando io non ci sarò più, loro, silenziosi e saggi, assisteranno ancora, per centinaia di anni, alle vicende umane.
Oltrepassato il cancelletto, sono circondata da ulivi dai grandi tronchi contorti e chiome folte; giro intorno ad ognuno per scoprirne tutte le facce e sentire l’energia che emanano.
Qualcuno sorride ancora quando si parla dell’energia degli alberi, eppure anche la scienza ha scoperto che camminare in mezzo agli alberi, o meglio ancora toccarli, abbracciarli, fa molto bene al corpo e alla mente; rallenta il battito cardiaco, aumenta le difese immunitarie e diminuisce l’aggressività.
It is exciting to be here, in the territory of an ancient history, where these trees have seen many others like me, pass over time. When I’m not here anymore, they will still witness human affairs, silent and wise, for hundreds of years.
Beyond the gate, I am surrounded by olive trees with large twisted trunks and thick foliage; I walk around each one to discover all their faces and feel the energy they emanate.
Someone still smiles when talking about the energy of trees, yet science has also found that walking in the trees, or better yet touching them, embracing them, is very good for body and mind; slows the heart rate, increases the immune system and decreases aggressiveness.
C'è anche l'incredibile scoperta di due scienziati, uno ungherese e l'altro danese, che attraverso dei sensori laser, hanno individuato che gli alberi hanno una sorta di battito al loro interno, che ricorda quello di un battito cardiaco. Un impulso che pompa e distribuisce l’acqua, proprio come un cuore pompa il sangue.
There is also the incredible discovery of two scientists, one from Hungary and the other from Denmark, who, through laser sensors, have identified that trees have a sort of beat inside them, reminiscent of a heart beat. An impulse that pumps and distributes water, just like a heart pumps blood.
Mi dirigo verso uno degli ulivi più imponenti, la chioma ragguardevole copre buona parte del tronco. Ne misuro a occhio la circonferenza, non è meno di otto, dieci metri; non smetto di guardarlo, toccarlo e fotografarlo. E' così grande che potrebbe essere una casetta con un enorme tetto di foglie.
I head towards one of the most imposing olive trees, the remarkable foliage covers a good part of the trunk. I estimate its circumference, it is not less than nine or ten meters; I don't stop looking at it, touching it and photographing it. It is so large that it could be a cottage with a huge roof of leaves.
Mi piace pensare che queste fotografie siano una documentazione preziosa, perchè poi mi hanno detto, che l'accesso in questa parte dell'uliveto è proibito, eppure qualcuno aveva lasciato aperto il cancelletto. Ancora una volta l' istinto del viaggiatore?
Penso proprio di sì, sono arrivata al momento giusto.
I like to think that these photographs are a precious documentation, because they told me later, that access to this part of the olive grove is prohibited, but yet someone left the gate open. Once again the instinct of the traveler? I really think so, I arrived at the right time.
Davide, un' amico di Cagliari appassionato di alberi come me, mi ha detto che l'origine di questo parco risale al medioevo, quando i monaci benedettini impiantarono ii primi ulivi.
Davide, a friend from Cagliari, fond of trees like me, told me that the origin of this park dates back to the Middle Ages, when the Benedictine monks planted the first olive trees.
Sembra che nella stessa epoca, i Pisani, sollecitati da Papa Benedetto VIII a cacciare i mussulmani dalla Sardegna, esortarono la popolazione locale a innestare gli olivastri, concedendoglieli una volta piantati.
It seems that in the same period, the Pisans, urged by Pope Benedict VIII to drive out the Muslims from Sardinia, pushed the local population to graft the olive trees, which became theirs once planted.
Molti di questi alberi erano fino a poco tempo fa di proprietà dei cittadini. In seguito, il Comune di Villamassargia, ha dato ogni ulivo in affidamento per 99 anni al rispettivo proprietario di origine.
Many of these trees were until recently owned by citizens. Subsequently, the Municipality of Villamassargia gave each olive tree to the original owner, for the next 99 years.
Quindi quasi ogni famiglia custodisce un esemplare dell’oasi e alcune lettere sui tronchi indicano le iniziali del capofamiglia. Io però non le ho trovate.
So almost every family has one tree located in the oasis and some letters on the trunks indicate the initials of the family’s head name. However I have not found any.
Ogni forma, un'esperienza di vita. Ripenso a un lavoro fotografico, realizzato anni fa, il cui concept dà il titolo alla collezione di immagini "Shape Experience", dove la forma dei fiori e degli alberi fotografati rappresenta il loro percorso nel tempo, evoluzioni e metamorfosi.
Anche la forma dell' albero davanti a me, è stata plasmata dagli avvenimenti genetici, biologici, metereologici, umani, e molto altro ancora, della sua vita individuale e della sua specie.
La forma, appunto, di un'esperienza.
Every shape, a life experience. I think back to a photographic work, made years ago, whose concept gives the title to the "Shape Experience" Image Collection, where the shape of the flowers and trees photographed, represents their path over time, the evolution and the metamorphoses.
Even the aspect of the tree in front of me has been shaped by the genetic, biological, meteorological, human, and many more events of its individual life and its species.
The shape in fact, of an experience.
Continuo il mio pellegrinaggio. Vivo gli uliveti come cattedrali naturali, dove il tempo perde il suo significato, pervaso dal sacro di queste presenze solenni.
I continue my pilgrimage. I live the olive groves as natural cathedrals, where time loses its meaning, pervaded by the Sacred of these solemn presences.
Riprendo fiato, mi siedo accanto al più grande dei patriarchi, il gigante buono.
Con cautela, per non danneggiarlo in alcun modo, appoggio la schiena al tronco e chiudo gli occhi. Sono completamente serena, qui mi sento al sicuro.
Taking a breath, I sit down next to the greatest of the patriarchs, the good giant.
With caution, in order not to damage it in any way, I rest my back on the trunk and close my eyes. I am completely serene, here I feel safe.

Esco dall'uliveto delle meraviglie e torno sulla strada che porta all'entrata dell'oasi.
Da lontano emerge subito Sa Reina, la Regina è circondata da un recinto protettivo.
I leave the olive grove of wonders and go back to the road that leads to the entrance of the oasis. Sa Reina emerges from afar, the Queen is surrounded by a protective fence.
Al centro di un prato fiorito di margheritine, sovrastato da nuvole immobili in questa assenza di vento, colpisce per le dimensioni del suo tronco, una circonferenza di sedici metri.
At the center of a meadow in bloom with daisies, dominated by motionless clouds in this absence of wind, she is striking for the size of her trunk, a circumference of sixteen meters.
Mentre mi allontano, mi giro per un'ultimo sguardo, da questo lato la sovrana di S'Ortu Mannu sembra un drago che si affacci tra la chioma di rami, ma bisogna avere occhi attenti per scoprirlo.
As I walk away, I turn around for a last glance, on this side the sovereign of S'Ortu Mannu looks like a dragon looking out from the foliage of branches, but you need to have careful eyes to see it.
Un attimo dopo però, sa Reina è già nascosta da un velo di rami.
A moment later, I turn back again, Sa Reina, The Queen, is hidden by a veil of leaves.
Ripenso a quello che mi ha detto Claudio Lallai, un giovane scultore sardo, quando mi consegnò la meravigliosa maschera del Fauno Guerriero > Non mi considero uno scultore, sono solo un artigiano che svela quello che c'è già nell'albero, il suo spirito <
Quel fauno guerriero, che ha avuto un ruolo significativo nella mia vita, era stato scolpito proprio nel legno di un albero di ulivo abbattuto dal vento.
I think back to what Claudio Lallai, a young Sardinian artist, said, when he handed me the wonderful mask of the Faun Warrior > I do not consider myself a sculptor, I am only a craftsman who reveals what there is already in the tree, its spirit <
That Faun Warrior, who played a significant role in my life, had been carved precisely in the wood of an old olive tree, blown down by the wind.
