Effetto Grecia/Greece effect

18 lug

Sipping a drink at the threshold of a tiny minimarket, cradled by the cool draft of an ajar window, the laughter of a group of Greeks on holiday drifts from the small terrace on the street. I turn for a moment: a dark-haired woman holds the scene, speaking to an audience of men gathered around her, drawing smiles and admiration.

A modern Lysistrata, drawing every gaze with her beauty, the ironic curve of her eyes, and the confidence exuded by her body. She catches my eye and smiles at me.

The Athenian girl behind the counter steps outside to greet me in Italian, then vanishes into the back; the pulse of life flows slow, suspended between watermelons and crates of freshly gathered figs.

As I savor my favorite breakfast, a kalitsouni stuffed with local wild herbs, the large television on the opposite wall suddenly flickers to life, and a fast-paced Greek melody bursts into the room. A spark ripples through the air; objects seem to awaken and dance. An earthquake? I chuckle, thinking I might be having daytime visions. Yet, what floods me in this exact moment is nothing but a surge of happiness—a joy as unreasonable and senseless as love, as dazzling as being drunk on freedom.

I tell myself that life can be beautiful on mornings like this—when, with my bags loaded into the car, I set off toward an unknown destination, toward whatever unfolds.

I surrender to this sense of pleasure, softening both lips and soul; behind my eyes, those beautiful lines by Merini drift into view: "I am happy to the outermost, deepest corner of my heart… I feel the sea like a ring around my life…"

Blessed be this island, offering pinks and turquoises and dreamy skies and the sacred faces of the olive trees.

For in Crete, every ancient olive tree holds a face; walking through these centuries-old groves, as if inside cathedrals, you can hear their voice whispering of life. If you press your chest against the bark—wrinkled like the skin of an old man—and half-close your eyes, you can feel that potent energy that has traversed time. The contorted trunks, coiled upon themselves, are the scars left by the journey, while the roots, growing ever stronger, remain the anchor to life.

"Today, let me be happy, just me, with or without anyone. What can I say? I am happy."
