Viaggio nel cuore della Sardegna Journey into the heart of Sardinia

Tempo di lettura: 36 min

Ci siamo.

Here we are. 🚘 It is time to leave!

The metamorphosis has already taken place: the metropolitan world has landed on the Sardinian coasts. Today, towards Orrì, a roaring Ferrari overtook me at full speed, scaring away the cattle egrets stationary in the fields. Then the techno music from the beach DJs fuels the holiday frenzy among the umbrellas of the crowded beach bars.

It is time to leave.

The heart of the island is my destination; to arrive through the villages, where silence still reigns supreme.

Lodine, Gavoi, Barbagia di Ollolai. Sardegna.

Lodine, Gavoi, Barbagia of Ollolai. Sardinia.

Ritorno a Lodine, in Barbagia, e ritrovo Annetta.

I return to Lodine, in Barbagia, and reunite with Annetta. After a sumptuous lunch and being immersed in the joyful family of children, siblings, uncles, nieces, nephews, and grandparents... I head towards Lake Gusana, in Gavoi, searching for a place to walk in silence.

I don't know the area well, but as always, I trust my instinct, which makes me turn suddenly up the steep slope leading to the restaurant that shares the lake's name.

I proceed further, along a dirt track, as far as I can go, then I set off on a trail.

From up here, the lake, nestled in the dense and blossoming greenery of the surrounding hills, leaves me breathless.

Walking and walking, I discover that the trail leads to the base of the dam and goes around it all the way to the waterfall.

.

I sit to contemplate the waterfall and listen to its sound; once again, I tell myself that traveling with instinct is the best way to discover new paths and new emotions. Isn't this, perhaps, what we are all looking for?

Ovodda, Barbagia of Ollolai.

In Ovodda, the most interesting mural shows a knight with a shield in the shape of a sa pintadera.

Patriarchi!

Ovodda, Barbagia of Ollolai. Patriarchs!

In Ovodda, in a bar with Annetta, the friend I met in Lodine, we were chatting with the friendly owner. When she found out about my passion for trees, she offered to call a friend with a jeep who could take us to discover a century-old forest. No sooner said than done. Annetta, fearless in her summer slippers, tackles the path from where the four-wheel-drive can go no further, all the way to the sight of the patriarchs. How wonderful!

And there they are, in front of us, the patriarchs of the forest. Majestic, immense holm oaks that seem to carry the weight of centuries on their twisted branches. Standing at the foot of these giants, silence becomes dense, almost sacred, and you truly understand what it means to enter the deep soul of the Barbagia.

Once again, another monumental holm oak, one of those millennial patriarchs with an archaic and overwhelming strength, its gigantic and gnarled branches stretching out like mighty arms to protect the forest. A spectacular vision that inspires respect and veneration.

Arriving down to our time through a journey of millions of years, the stones are living and poetic presences that preserve the memory of the sacred they have passed through.

Call it pareidolia, call it what you like, but from the granite block, the profile of an old wise man or a stone guardian of Barbagia clearly emerges. Finding these hidden sculptures shaped by the wind and time is always a sign for me, a message—don't I always say that instinct leads you where you need to go? What we call reality can have endless other dimensions. Time does not exist; every tiny particle moves in an incessant cosmic dance.

Sa Itria, Gavoi, Barbagia di Ollolai. Sardegna.

Sa Itria, Gavoi, Barbagia of Ollolai. Sardinia.

Morning rules.

  • Leave very early in search of the by now mythical century-old chestnut tree that everyone talks about, but nobody knows where it is.

  • Meet Matteo by chance, a future agronomist and improvised "tree-catcher".

  • Patiently endure the sneaky and treacherous foxtails that creep into your socks, reaching the most remote and sensitive corners of your feet.

  • End up in a sheepfold and accept a glass of fresh milk from the shepherd.

  • Rest in the shade of the big trees, next to the Sa Perda Fitta monolith, and imagine the Nuragic people sitting right there.

  • Being told about the festival of the Madonna of Sa Itria, when "sas nobinantes" offer food to all the pilgrims in the "muristenes", the small houses around the church, with music and dancing.

  • Discovering the stone bear hidden among the trees.

.

  • Finding only at the very end an emotionally moving patriarch, because trees call you only when, with a quiet mind, communication becomes telepathic.

  • Sheltering as soon as the sun becomes incandescent in the bar of Lodine, with an ice-cold Ichnusa and the holy air conditioning; someone talks about the man from Gavoi who trained a golden eagle, but that is another story.

Gavoi. Barbagia di Ollolai, Sardegna.

Gavoi. Barbagia of Ollolai, Sardinia.

Gavoi. Barbagia of Ollolai, Sardinia. While waiting for Gavoi's unparalleled rotisserie chef, Tonino, to finish cooking my lunch, I head towards the Church of the Madonna del Carmelo, where preparations for tonight's festival are in full swing. "Su comitatu" organizing committee has found the most beautiful flowers to adorn the tiny gem of a church, built in Gothic-Catalan style in 1643.

Under the beautiful frescoed vaults of the church, villagers continuously pass by for a greeting, an offer of help, or to deliver the flowers that will decorate the festival. For me, a metropolitan citizen, such a present community makes me think of our large apartment buildings, where even people living on the same floor barely greet each other.

Tonight, in Gavoi, the procession and celebrations in the historic center, led by the "leva 1971" (the generation born in 1971), with music, dancing, and even a lottery.

Lodine, Barbagia of Ollolai, Sardinia.

The first night I slept here, I was suddenly woken up by a prolonged, repeated, and heartfelt braying that returned every single night.

The next morning, I saw the little donkey, young and skeletal, gnawing quite fiercely at the ground inside a wire-fence enclosure. I approached, but it ran away in fear.

At first, seeing how young he was, I thought he was calling for his mother; later on, however, when I started passing him carrots and apples through the fence, I realized that hunger was the reason for his nightly braying: nothing but bare dirt in the field, with no hay or feed left for him.

My call—a brief, repeated whistle and a "ciao"—has become the usual signal to make him come over to the only spot in the fence where, through a tiny gap, I manage to feed him the wide variety of fruit he is greedy for. Often, when I come back home, I find him already there waiting for me, but if I get too close he runs off; he doesn't trust me just yet.

I started asking around for information about the owner; many told me that he is "a bit of a difficult person" and that, in any case, he has gone to the seaside.

Ciao is so skinny that her pelvis and ribs show right through her skin.

Yesterday evening, very hot after a hike, I stopped by the bar, and right at that moment at the counter was Salvatore, the shepherd who, as I discovered, owns the mother and the little sister of "my" donkey.

This morning, I went to meet them.

Due mesi di dolcezza.

Two months of sweetness.

I also found out that the little donkey, who is now named Ciao, is actually a young female donkey pregnant with her first foal. While waiting to see if the owner will agree to sell her, so she can then be moved to my friends' farm here, I bought 25 kg of feed and received a large sack of straw as a gift. Later on, I hope to find some hay, but it seems difficult to find small quantities that I can easily transport, as hay here is supplied in gigantic round bales.

Meanwhile, it is a pure joy to see Ciao rush over at my call and to watch her as she chews her feed contentedly—above all, not hearing her bray at night anymore.

Let's see what happens over the next few days, but I really hope for a happy ending.

This morning, early, I get moving to find a solution for Ciao; I must continue my journey and I don't want to leave her alone again.

I proceed up a steep slope; a smiling young boy rides his bicycle up onto the sidewalk, seemingly without any effort.

I look at him with admiration, thinking of millions of his peers glued to a screen; he looks at me, and we smile at each other.

Then, once again, instinct "leads me where I need to go." I walk into Lodine's only shop to buy apples for Ciao and discover that I am in the right place, at the right time, to meet Bonaria and Maria Paola, who say they always see me from their windows when I call the little donkey to feed her. With them is also Danilo, who knows Ciao's owner and calls him to find out if he wants to sell her. The answer is negative, because he wants to trade her for a male donkey. In short, the little donkey is just a bargaining chip to him; could that be why he abandoned her for weeks in an enclosure without food?

I express all my outrage and beg the small group to help me find someone who loves animals as much as I do, someone who can feed Ciao every day when I am no longer here—perhaps a young boy on school summer holidays.

No sooner said than done: Bonaria has an 11-year-old son who is crazy about animals, and she calls him to come and join us.

When little Antonio arrives, I recognize the boy on the bicycle; he tells me he already knows Ciao, because he felt sorry seeing her so skinny and every now and then he would bring her some carrots. I am overjoyed; we go together to the little donkey, I teach him the whistle, and Ciao immediately trots towards us. Antonio even manages to get her to come close to the apple he holds in his hand.

We stay for a while watching her, then we shake hands to seal our pact and his commitment. A small tip and a photo to tell everyone that Ciao now has Antonio and will be able to continue living along with the little foal growing in her belly. What a beautiful day!

***

After some time, this story brought me the most beautiful ending I could have ever hoped for. I have always stayed in touch with Antonio's mother and discovered that, on that day, this great little guardian used my tip to buy apples for Ciao. Not only that: Antonio had some money saved up because his big dream was to buy a horse. Instead, he decided to use all his savings to buy Ciao, rescuing her and bringing her to live safely in his family's countryside.

Not long ago, I received the sweetest news, along with a few photos: Ciao has become a mother! In the picture, she finally looked happy, healthy, and beautifully plump next to her little foal. A story that gives hope.

Gavoi. Barbagia di Ollolai, Sardegna.

Gavoi. Barbagia of Ollolai, Sardinia.

Here, everyone knows Nicola and Zulema, his golden eagle, but few know that this twenty-two-year-old from Gavoi also knows the most interesting patriarchs in the area.

In this period, Zulema is molting her feathers and must be left in peace, so we decide to go in search of one of the century-old trees in the area. We carefully cross a clearing where cows are grazing, pass a small brook and an uphill path, and there it is: "His Majesty the multi-century-old chestnut tree."

My friend Ignazio Camarda told me that chestnut trees are an ancient presence in Sardinia, already mentioned by Pliny, and it seems that the Spaniards planted the chestnut trees in Barbagia in the 1600s. A silent thank you to those who have preserved it to this day, because looking at it, touching it, and sitting in its shade is a privilege and a great emotion.

After dutiful-ly embracing the immense trunk, I photograph Nicola in front of the patriarch: when you photograph trees, only the contrast with the dimensions of a human figure gives you the perception of its majesty.

Mamoiada, Barbagia di Ollolai. Sardegna.

Mamoiada, Barbagia of Ollolai. Sardinia.

In Mamoiada, the rows of Cannonau vines stretch out endlessly, yet within the vineyards of Salvatore and Antonio Mele, something truly extraordinary awaits. A colossal, ancient grapevine—boasting a circumference of 105 centimeters—coils like an anaconda around the neighboring cherry tree, still bearing fruit against the passage of time.

It is Antonio who guides me through his vineyards to the patriarch vine. He is a passionate winegrower who always seeks to use natural elements to tend to his plants. The year a downy mildew epidemic swept across Sardinia, the biggest names in Sardinian wine came here to discover how Antonio had managed to avert the disaster.

The vine is impressive in size, but what strikes me most is how it found support in the neighboring cherry tree, allowing it to live and keep growing. My admiration for the plant world grows deeper and more boundless every day.

Salute!

The day ends in Antonio’s cellar—which back in the 70s used to be a ballroom—celebrating our encounter with a glass of Vinera. A meaningful name for a wine, because in Mamoiada, when you taste a good wine and want to emphasize its flavor, you say: "Custa est una vinera!", "This is an excellent glass."

A taste, too, of the wonderful organic Basarule. To life!

Orani, Sarule, Barbagia di Ollolai. Sardegna.

Orani, Sarule, Barbagia of Ollolai. Sardinia.

Strong wind on Mount Gonare, a granite massif cloaked in woods of chestnut, holm oak, downy oak, and rare botanical species.

It is the first time I have managed to find and photograph Atropa belladonna, commonly known as Deadly Nightshade. Despite its alluring name, it is one of the most toxic plants in our wild flora—every single part of it contains powerful alkaloids—making it one of those wild wonders to be strictly admired without being touched.

It is a plant steeped in ancient legends and lore. Its name stems from the practices of Renaissance women, who used its extracts as eye drops to dilate their pupils, rendering their gaze more languid and "beautiful".

I venture onto a faintly marked path, blanketed with branches and leaves. And it is right here that I make my new botanical discovery.

It is the famous Ophrys apifera, commonly known as the Bee Orchid. Orchids of the Ophrys genus are celebrated in the botanical world for the phenomenon of sexual deception. The flower offers no nectar; instead, it mimics the shape and releases chemical signals—pheromones—identical to those of the females of specific pollinating insects. Attracted by the call, the males attempt to mate with the flower and, without realizing it, transfer pollen from one plant to another. Finding it along the paths of Mount Gonare is really moving.

I return to Mamoiada, accepting Antonio’s invitation, as he can now introduce me to other patriarchs living in his vineyard.

Standing before the immense downy oak, I think of the quiet strength with which it has traveled through time. To live like this, as if eternity lay before us, resilient through every earthly passage.

This world of wood, sap, and leaves, home to countless creatures, is the green breath that feeds the planet’s oxygen. In its presence, human life appears so arrogant, unaware of its own inferiority before the power, majesty, and unfathomable depth of nature.

Orgosolo, Barbagia di Ollolai. Sardegna.

Orgosolo, Barbagia of Ollolai. Sardinia.

I walk under the sun along the main street of Orgosolo, searching in vain for something to eat. The street is a miles-long uphill climb, the shops and restaurants are closed during these hottest hours, and the bars have no food to offer.

After taking a few photos, and growing hungrier by the minute, I head back toward my car, making my way all the way down the hill.

Suddenly, the world begins to spin dizzyingly around me. Realizing I am about to collapse, I raise my hand to a passing car. The man pulls over, and with great effort, I ask if he can take me to my car.

I get in, and the breeze from the open window revives me. We stop to pick up his wife; Salvatore, a savior by name and nature, along with his wife, invites me to their home so they can cook something for me. I gently refuse, saying I am fine now, but they insist, and insist again. I look at them, I see sincere eyes and warm smiles, and it is impossible to say no.

Orgosolo is famous for its murals, which beautifully represent the soul and character of this place. I look through them and choose two, my personal favorites.

This mural, painted by Francesco Del Casino, captured my heart with its stark contrasts and powerful simplicity. It depicts an old shepherd resting on a small stool, leaning on his walking stick, while a woman in traditional attire walks away in the background, carrying a heavy basin gracefully balanced on her head. It feels like a silent, timeless snapshot of daily life in the Barbagia of the past.

This second mural is a symbol of the historic, nonviolent Pratobello uprising of 1969, when the entire community stood united to protect their land. Painted in striking, expressive shades of red and white, it depicts a dense crowd of shepherds, women, and children moving forward together beneath the monumental word "RINASCITA"—Rebirth.

Mamoiada, Barbagia di Ollolai. Sardegna.

Mamoiada, Barbagia of Ollolai. Sardinia.

Anch'io sorrido, mi sento libera e felice.

"O mia diletta luna.. Graziosa luna dei nuovi inizi"

Tonight, hunting for the full moon.

I take an uphill road that I do not know, hoping it will lead me high up onto the mountain to catch a glimpse of the moon. As I climb, Mamoiada appears more and more like a nativity scene, the road narrows, and the song of the cicadas fills the air. I keep going through twists, climbs, and descents, and then... there she is! Right on the mountain ridge, framed by thistles and mastic trees.

It is in moments like these that I think of the cameras and lenses back in my studio, which would allow me a close-up of the face of the moon, smiling down at me tonight.

I smile too, feeling free and happy.

"O my beloved moon... Gracious moon of new beginnings"

Foresta di Montes, Orgosolo. Barbagia. Sardegna.

Montes forest, Orgosolo. Barbagia. Sardinia.

For years, I dreamed of being here. I had been told that I couldn't go into the Montes Forest alone; that even an experienced guide had fallen into a crevice and was found a year later. That if anything happens, you can't call for help because there is no signal, and then the wild boars... Yet, here I am, crossing this boundless and wild territory of woods, rocks, canyons, springs, and so much more. Dozens of kilometers of dirt roads, only to then explore on foot the primary holm oak forest—a world still untouched, preserved from any human activity.

***

A friend of friends, met by chance—a passionate regular of the Montes forest—turns my dream into reality.

But then, does "by chance" actually exist when you travel alone in the heart of nature? Or is it rather that primordial instinct which, with the mind quieted by silence, unlocks a space in time, guiding you exactly where you are destined to go—to find, to discover, to give or receive messages? Along my path, I have encountered messages that truly changed my life, and the Montes forest will be a place of that suspension of reality where everything is revealed.

We set off on this adventure, which will prove surprising beyond all imagination, in his jeep built to tackle kilometers of rugged, rocky tracks, within a wild territory where very few dare to venture.

As we slowly bump over the stones at a walking pace, Giovanni tells me that some time ago, a forest guard who knew the forest well simply vanished into thin air. They searched for him with helicopters and dogs, but he was found only months later inside a crevice. Because here, besides the total lack of phone signal and any existing maps, there are fissures in the ground where you can fall in if you are not extremely careful, just as unfortunately happened to that forest guard.

Meanwhile, we move forward relying purely on orientation and Giovanni’s profound knowledge, as he has always lived and breathed this totally wild place.

There are fissures in the rock where, if you look over the edge, you cannot see the bottom of the chasm.

We are traversing a landscape rugged and sublime, like that tree grown among the rocks, a solitary sentinel facing the moving clouds. As we venture deeper into the territory, the communities of ancient trees become more and more frequent.

We pass a pinnetto and a peaceful little family of boar-pig hybrids. The mother is nursing three piglets; they show no fear and look at us with curiosity. Who knows where they came from.

I ask Giovanni to move closer to the gigantic juniper for a photo to bear witness to the extraordinary dimensions of this specimen.

Now we continue on foot. We are entering the most intimate part of the heart of Montes, where man has never set foot: the primary holm oak forest. I look around me: this is how trees live for hundreds of years, no removal of fallen trunks, no pruning, no afforestation. Here, humans cannot choose, as they always do, to mold the greenery in the image of their own minds.

I breathe, free among the free.

I feel we have crossed a portal beyond which the arcane finds its correspondencies. Here, the whisper of the forest grows louder and, having left behind the path and its trace, I am in a primordial temple, long free of visitors. This is why trees and rocks come alive with presences suspended between the natural and human worlds.

Giovanni and I do not speak, each of us immersed in our own sensations. We wander like visitors from another time, another dimension. Without realizing it, I have been walking with my head tilted upward to look at that green canopy, and suddenly, Giovanni is gone. I tell myself I can find the way back: was it that passage through the high bushes? Or perhaps that slight slope to the left? I tell myself I just need to look up at the treetops... Then, the realization hits: yes, I am lost. My breathing quickens, I decide to control it by breathing deeply, and I sit down. How many times have I lost my bearings on the journey of my life; one must not despair, only quiet the mind and its fears to let instinct resurface. Now I feel strong, I feel determined, I set off without thinking, one step after another. I refuse to be afraid, fear is of no use... Giovanni’s voice calling out to me arrives just as I am thinking this. How wonderful, Giovanni, I have found you again!

To Montes alone

I wish I could return to the primary forest every single day, but today Giovanni has relatives visiting. I decide to go there alone; of course, I won’t make it all the way to the primary forest, but I still want to feel part of that world.

After the first stretch of the road by car, I continue on foot. In the total solitude of the place, two eyes scrutinize me. "Hello!" I tell it. It follows me with its gaze.

My step grows light, my soul filled with the scents and sounds of the forest.

Those magnificent words of Chandra Candiani come to my mind: "Walking alone in the forest, without thoughts. The woods heal without you having to do anything, they include you, and being a tiny piece of something larger brings you into a dimension that dispenses nameless remedies. We, too, become nameless, we shed our outer skin, and the lightness of the heart is the first sign of healing."

Monte San Giovanni, Orgosolo. Barbagia. Sardegna.

Mount San Giovanni, Orgosolo. Barbagia. Sardinia.

Today, I'm heading up there, the very top of the Montes forest, all the way up to the 1,306-meter limestone tower of Monte San Giovanni. I set off early, tracing a path that winds through dense woods and rugged rocks. The climb is tough, but challenges are my daily bread. More than anything, I want to look down upon my beloved forest and the wild embrace of the Supramonte.

I pass through rock spires up to 70 meters high, formed in the Mesozoic era—stone totems surrounded and covered by rare endemic floral species, such as the Ribes sardoum, a protected species at risk of extinction. From above, the landscape increasingly reveals its ruggedness.

I reach the fire lookout station, where I catch my breath together with Salvatore, the park ranger on duty. Here, there is a 360-degree view of the rugged lands of Supramonte and Gennargentu; beneath them lie endless caverns and caves that stretch underground for miles and miles.

Salvatore asked me the usual, inevitable question: "But did you come all the way up here alone?" I answered him with a small, ironic smile. He pointed out the Gorropu Gorge, the Gulf of Orosei, Baunei, and the Ogliastra region in the landscape, where the sea is visible on clear days. Everything is barren and parched by the sun and drought. In recent days, many fires have broken out, the first one in Siniscola, which he also reported. The messages I hear on his two-way radio are continuous; all the lookout stations in Sardinia are connected to one another to promptly communicate even the smallest sign of a possible emergency.

Then he stares at the Montes forest right below us: "If a fire breaks out in the Montes forest, only Canadair planes and helicopters can intervene in this territory, it is so inaccessible." His voice reveals the anxiety that this thought causes in him and in me too. The sacred green sanctuary of Montes, one of the most important ancient holm oak forests in Europe, with a primary woodland never touched by man—no, it cannot, it must not burn.

I follow him into the lookout cabin for a glass of fresh water; everything is so tidy.

The rack with small jars, the red and white checkered fabric, the map of Sardinia hanging next to the small window, and the handwritten words on the wood: SARDEGNA LIBERA INDIPENDENZA.

It's here that forest rangers live, in the scorching heat of summer and the freezing cold of winter, always on alert day and night to protect a green heritage that belongs to all of us.

Ricordatelo".

Before I descend from this prehistoric world, his advice, spoken with the tone of a kind father: "Please, when you go walking in a forest, at the first sign of a storm, turn back quickly. Lightning can strike trees and cause fires, but it can also strike people. It happened to a colleague of mine, struck by a lightning bolt that came right through the open door of the old cabin. Luckily he survived, but he was sick for months. Remember that."

I slowly descend the rocks, still hearing the echo of his words and the message I found up there

Grazie Salvatore!

Thanks, Salvatore!

Strada per la foresta di Montes, Orgosolo. Barbagia. Sardegna.

Road to Montes Forest, Orgosolo. Barbagia. Sardinia.

The entire road leading to the forest is exciting, with beautiful trees on both sides, including some centuries-old ones. I get out of the car and walk up the slope, always drawn by new scenery. I come across a small group of wild pigs; they seem to look for food and start following me, perhaps hoping I will hand out something. Wild pigs in Sardinia are crossed with wild boars; they are usually calm, but they can become aggressive. These ones appear friendly, a cheerful trotting brigade, oink oink.

I turn back, followed by the small procession, when a horseman crosses my path, completely unfazed by the asphalt and traffic. It is common to meet them among the cars along the road, a constant reminder that I am in Barbagia, the wild and most authentic heart of Sardinia. A mountainous territory that has preserved intact ancient traditions, the Sardinian language in its most austere form, and archaic rituals.

It is the emblem of Sardinia's cultural resistance and identity.

The pigs head toward "su pinnettu." The pinnettu—usually round, built with dry-stone walls and a thatched roof of branches—was the rural shelter for shepherds, who slept on the ground next to the central fire. This one shares its space with a giant holm oak and a stone trough. I let the little pigs drink the water and walk away. The Montes forest is waiting for me, and I am eager to discover it.
