Mandrolisai!

26 mag

On the road from Seulo to Atzara, I am struck by a majestic downy oak, surely centuries-old, towering at the far end of a field. I decide to take a detour to look at it up close and venture down a dirt track that I hope will bring me closer to the tree. I do not reach it, and instead get lost among the fields until I come upon a farm, where I ask for directions from a man sitting in front of the house

I.D.R.

He catches my gaze shifting toward the small vineyard nearby. "It's my grandfather's vineyard," he says. "We just make wine for the family, but if you go to Atzara, the most beautiful vineyards are those of Fradiles. Call Paolo; they are a highly respected family in the area.”

I take his advice, and when I call him, Paolo invites me to watch the bottling process, which will happen the very day after my arrival.

Atzara

The welcome from the Fradiles family could not be warmer. While the truck where the bottling will take place is being prepared, Antonio, the vineyard agronomist and cousin of Paolo and Roberto, the apprentice winemaker, accompany me to visit the vines.

We walk among the rows, and in a lively conversation, I receive a wealth of information.

"Fradiles" in Sardinian means cousins; in fact, the cousins of this family decided to unite their vineyards under a single brand, and they all collaborate on every major milestone in the life of their wine, such as today's bottling.

One statement by Antonio strikes me: "The difference in territories is made by the people who live there, studying and working with their heads down."

Roberto explains to me that Mandrolisai DOC is made from three different grape varieties: at least 35% Bovale, which here is called Muristeddu, Cannonau, and Monica. The leaves of the Muristeddu are easily recognizable because they are a bit fuzzy. It has been a very dry season this year, and the harvest will take place earlier than expected. We sit in the shade of a large olive tree at the edge of the ancient vineyard: "It was grafted and produces three different types of olives," Antonio tells me. My gaze drifts among the rows; it is beautiful to be here.

We return to the cellars, where the whole community of relatives and friends has gathered; the bottling begins, and the work proceeds at a frantic pace but in general high spirits.

A little further on, in the vegetable garden, Giovanna is picking radishes; they are ready, we taste them, delicious! She takes me with her to the pond where the ducks are splashing around, and right next to it, a little family of turtles. Then, the most coveted harvest: white and red figs. Moving from one tree to another, our harvesting is just one big tasting with plenty of "Mmmhmm... so good!".

The figs picked straight from the trees are irresistible, yet we still manage to fill a basket for the guests. How wonderful this countryside is.

Back at the house, I am welcomed by the festive greetings of the dogs, who are deeply loved by this family, and the smiles of the women. Two long tables are already set to welcome the guests. In the kitchen, I meet Angela, Paolo's mother, and I am amazed by the calmness with which she prepares lunch for so many people. She is putting the final touches on the appetizers, a rich aroma of roasting meats wafts from the oven, a grand variety of pastries is on display, and of course, the Fradiles wine.

The lunch is excellent: the lasagna melts in your mouth, the meats are cooked to perfection, fruit freshly picked from the garden, and so much more.

The people are friendly and not at all intimidated by the enormous amount of food offered. Sitting across from me is Federica, who tells me about her natural dyeing workshop using pigments from wild local plants that she gathers herself. It is called "La Robbia," named after the madder root used to dye things red. After lunch, we go to visit Maurizio, who is working on the skeins he needs to deliver. Dyeing has always been one of my passions.

A perfect day, a special thank you to my hosts,

rich in great human warmth and a formidable wine.

Sorgono

Paola's delightful welcome awaits me in Sorgono. I discover the village, the geographical center of Sardinia, watching the moving clouds from my bedroom window, listening to the bells of the church next door, and passing by the plaque commemorating that right here, in via Azuni, Antonio Gramsci spent his childhood. Then in the evening, from the half-open door of the church of Santa Maria Assunta, the chants of the choir fill the little square outside.

Today, on the road from Sorgono towards Ortueri, the landscape is a painting of farms and vineyards. The air is fresh and scents of damp earth; the morning drizzle has given some respite to a very dry summer.

I pull over at the first layby to look at the landscape, but someone seems to be watching me—are those two eyes?

I walk around it; this century-old cork tree is beautiful, with a big heart.

Tonara

Savoring the best porcini and truffle ravioli of my life, I look up at the mountain ahead. Right at the summit, there is something that looks like a lighthouse; they tell me it is the forestry rangers' lookout. I decide to go up there. To see the clouds closer and to walk off the fantastic nougat from Tonara..

The man I ask for directions accompanies me in his car as far as the junction for the summit of Muggianeddu; it can truly be said that kindness dwells in Mandrolisai.

I proceed to the end of the paved road, and the panorama, framed by billowing cirrus clouds, is enchanting.

Then a narrow dirt track begins on the edge of the precipice; I move forward over rocks and potholes that make the car shudder.

The higher I climb, the more I wonder if I will find a turnout to make a U-turn when I head back down. I find one almost immediately, decide to park, and begin the climb—backpack on, "legs on my shoulders" as they say, and up towards the 1500 meters where the lookout is located.

Dry-stone walls divide the properties in striking perspective lines; in the air, the sound of cowbells—they are little donkeys rolling in the dust just a bit lower down. I walk calmly; this is my favorite state of being, alone in the middle of nowhere.

Dry-stone walls divide the properties in striking perspective lines; in the air, the sound of cowbells—they are little donkeys rolling in the dust just a bit lower down. I walk calmly; this is my favorite state of being, alone in the middle of nowhere.

My smile fades when, above the mountain opposite, I spot a column of rain pouring down from a black cloud and moving rapidly toward us. The thunder draws closer and closer, with lightning flashing continuously on the horizon. The wind is picking up, and there is a feeling that something is about to happen.

I quickly say goodbye to the little family and begin my descent at top speed; I must reach the car before the downpour hits, which could turn the dirt track into a stream, especially since the ground is very loose.

I reach the car, running down the slope, start the engine, and keep driving at top speed, with images of the disasters that occurred across Italy in recent weeks flashing through my mind. The dirt track seems endless. I finally reach the paved road, where water is already flowing in streams—it is pouring. Along the hairpin turns down to Tonara, the windshield wipers are on maximum, yet visibility is zero; with bated breath, I tackle the ten kilometers of curves to Sorgono, arriving under a driving rain.

Santu Loisu

I head out at sunset, with no destination. I follow a road, turn, go up, go down, and find myself in front of the cemetery. I chuckle to myself—this cannot be my destination, not yet. But I trust my instinct, and I keep going. Now I am skirting a magnificent forest; I stop a passing car to ask where this road leads, and the man answers perplexedly: "To Santu Loisu..." then adds, "but there's nothing there, it's just a tiny hamlet." I set off again, determined to find out what is in Santu Loisu.

As I move forward, the woods grow denser and denser, and I stop to contemplate them.

Trees, plants, and bushes stand side by side, overlapping one another, seeming to tighten in a great, impenetrable embrace. I venture among the trees, bypassing the thorny bushes.

I am walking on a stratification of roots, imagining that world of endless biological pathways, where trees are connected even underground, communicating with each other and behaving as a single living organism.

It is the intelligence of Nature that I am observing, and it touches my soul to the point of tears.

I continue along the road bordering the forest until I spot a wooden sign pointing to a trail toward Nuraghe Lò. I clamber up the slope, higher and higher, but there is no trace of the nuraghe. I retrace my steps and take a narrower path; there are no signs. Amidst the greenery, a tree fully covered in moss gleams brilliantly; I step closer to feel the softness of that natural gown.

Then I look up and there it is, on a knoll amidst rocks and plants, the small nuraghe with a tuft of greenery on top

It was built on a rocky outcrop, and it is wonderful to discover it like this, in the middle of the forest. I imagine men and women moving around covered in skins, in the surrounding nature, moving—who knows how—these blocks of freshly rough-hewn granite.

Inside there is no staircase, and on the wall opposite the entrance, there is a large lintelled window. One of the archaeologists' hypotheses is that this opening was meant to let in light and air, assuming that in some nuraghes the entrance was elevated.

It is precisely the mystery surrounding the nuraghes that creates the attraction and the suggestiveness that envelops you when you stand before them.

The discoveries of the day have galvanized me; it is almost sunset, but I continue until a crossroads, following a wooden arrow that points toward some Domus de Janas. I leave the car behind, cross a clearing of large trees, and enter a wood dappled with splashes of light and the scent of moss.

There is no defined path; despite the beauty of the place, I cannot find the Domus. Instead, I come across mighty cork oaks. These strong, fire-resistant trees, trees of memory, always deeply move me. When they are stripped like these, to extract the cork, the trunk takes on the appearance of a smooth body where even the wounds seem soothed by the nourishment of the bark.

I retrace my steps. In the distance, a little house with men chatting; I reach them, get the directions, and there they are—minuscule, incomparable, appearing like a small treasure in the undergrowth.

I sit with my back against the tree that seems to watch over them, and I imagine children coming to play here; only they could enter these Domus de Janas, the smallest I have ever seen.

On my return, as I pass the little house again, the guy who had pointed out the Janas, Roberto, offers me a glass of wine. An irresistible aroma wafts from a huge cooking pot. I ask if it is a restaurant, and they explain that they are preparing for a private party happening the next day. Friends begin to arrive, I am introduced to everyone, and in the end, the wife of Basilio—the guest of honor—invites me to the party. I will never tire of repeating that hospitality truly dwells in Mandrolisai.

Returning to Sorgono, the golden light of the sunset vibrates behind the forest peaks, and I think about how those few hours were packed with emotions. I tell myself once again that the mind has nothing to do with the path of discovery; rather, it is instinct, or what I call "being in sync with nature," that leads you where you need to go, to discover, meet, receive, or give messages.
