Muoversi in barca tra i canali, conoscere i luoghi più segreti, sconosciuti anche a molti veneziani, andare a "ombre e cicheti" fuori mano, esplorare la barena attraversando i suoi isolotti galleggianti ricoperti di erica.
My life in Venice: a heady journey.
Moving by boat through the canals, discovering the most secret corners unknown even to many Venetians; heading out of the way for ombre and cicheti, and exploring the salt marshes, weaving through floating islets carpeted in heather.

Iniziamo dalla barca, la nostra è uno zodiac ed è l’unico gommone a circolare nel centro della città; bisogna essere molto esperti della città e dei suoi canali per guidarlo e per curvare anche nei canali più stretti.
Let’s start from the boat, ours is a Zodiac and it is the only inflatable boat to navigate in the centre of the city; you have to be very expert of the city and its canals to drive it and to turn even in the narrowest canals.
A prua di solito si siedono i miei passeggeri preferiti, Cecilia e Artu’, Melissa invece rimane accanto ai miei piedi, al riparo da troppo vento. Bisogna tenere stretto Artù perché altrimenti si butta in acqua non appena passa un gabbiano, adora nuotare.
At the bow usually sit my favourite passengers, Cecilia and Artù, Melissa instead stays next to my feet, sheltered from too much wind. You have to hold Artù tight because otherwise he jumps into the water as soon as a seagull passes, he loves to swim.

Percorrendo i canali si incontrano sempre degli amici, oggi è Bepi con la sua gondola; un signore veneziano che preferisce alla barca a motore, una gondola, che è difficile da portare, ma racchiude nella sua storia un passato glorioso; la prima “gondolam” che si conosce era del 1094 D.C.
Along the canals we always meet friends, today it is Bepi with his gondola; a Venetian gentleman who prefers a gondola to a motor boat, which is difficult to row, but contains a glorious past in its history; the first known gondola was from 1094 AD.

Ora ci dirigiamo verso un’isola molto amata, Burano.
Now we head towards a much-loved island, Burano.
Burano è tra le isole della laguna di Venezia, quella che preferisco. Dista 8 chilometri da piazza San Marco e in gommone è una bella galoppata sulle onde.
Anche se vado spesso a Burano, ogni volta avviene la stessa magia, quella sensazione di essere in un sogno dove all'improvviso il mondo appare un luogo pieno di gioia come i colori che mi circondano.
Burano is among the islands of the Venice lagoon, the one I prefer. It is 8 kilometres from Piazza San Marco and by inflatable boat it is a fine gallop over the waves. [1, 2]
Even though I often go to Burano, the same magic happens every time, that feeling of being in a dream where suddenly the world appears a place full of joy, just like the colours that surround me.
Si dice che i pescatori, tornando a casa via mare, avevano difficoltà a causa della nebbia a identificare da lontano le proprie case, così decisero di dipingerle con colori differenti e vivaci.
It is said that the fishermen, returning home by sea, had difficulty identifying their homes from afar due to the fog, so they decided to paint them in different and bright colours.
Burano è famosa anche per i suoi merletti che risalgano al 1500 e si diffusero ben presto in Europa. La Scuola dei Merletti era gestita dalle suore dell'isola e le ragazze vi entravano a 12-13 anni.
Burano is also famous for its lace, which dates back to the 1500s and soon spread throughout Europe. The Lace School was run by the nuns of the island, and girls entered it at 12–13 years old.
Sulla strada del ritorno, ci fermiamo a raccogliere un po' d'erica, il cui nome botanico è Limonium Narbonense, che colora di lilla le "bassure salse", gli isolotti flottanti della barena.
On the way back, we stop to collect some heather, whose botanical name is Limonium Narbonense, which colours the "bassure salse" lilac, the floating islets of the salt marsh.

E' tempo di andare a mangiare qualcosa nel ristorante più famoso della Laguna.
It's time to go and eat something in the most famous restaurant in the Lagoon.
Oggi è una ricorrenza speciale e la festeggeremo nel ristorante più famoso di Venezia, la Locanda Cipriani, a Torcello. Da questo luogo di pace sono passati regnanti, presidenti e artisti famosi. Navighiamo nei canali stretti che portano all’isola dove era presente un insediamento sin dai primi secoli dell'Impero Romano.
Today is a special anniversary and we will celebrate it in the most famous restaurant in Venice, Locanda Cipriani, in Torcello. Royalty, presidents and famous artists have passed through this place of peace. We navigate the narrow canals that lead to the island, where a settlement has been present since the first centuries of the Roman Empire.
All’interno del ristorante ovviamente non si possono fare fotografie, ma posso assicurarvi che il cibo è sublime ed esprime perfettamente il messaggio di Cipriani: “La passione ci guida”.
Inside the restaurant of course you cannot take photographs, but I can assure you that the food is sublime and perfectly expresses Cipriani's message: "Passion guides us".

C’è un luogo dove amo andare dopo una giornata intensa di lavoro, da qui posso ammirare Venezia dall’alto che al tramonto accende d’oro la sua bellezza. Riesco a perdermi davanti alla vista mozzafiato e a svuotare la mente
There is a place where I love to go after an intense day of work; from here I can admire Venice from above as the sunset lights up its beauty in gold. I manage to lose myself before the breathtaking view and clear my mind.
La terrazza dell’Hilton, nell’isola della Giudecca, è un luogo dove raramente si avventurano i veneziani, eppure il Molino Stucky, nato nella metà dell’ottocento come fabbrica di cereali è un interessante esempio di architettura neogotica applicata a un edificio industriale, e gli aperitivi sono ottimi!
The terrace of the Hilton, on the island of Giudecca, is a place where Venetians rarely venture, yet the Molino Stucky, established in the mid-nineteenth century as a grain mill, is an interesting example of neo-Gothic architecture applied to an industrial building, and the aperitifs are excellent!
Stasera assisto al passaggio di una nave da crociera che sembra sfiorare la piscina.
Qui a Venezia ci sono due movimenti in conflitto tra loro, quello che non vuole il passaggio delle grandi navi nella città perché costituiscono un grave pericolo in quanto provocano un moto ondoso che minaccia la struttura stessa di Venezia, oltre ad essere una fonte di inquinamento. Poi quello dei commercianti e artigiani che temono una riduzione drastica dei loro guadagni senza i passeggeri delle navi da crociera.
Alla fine però ha vinto il comitato "No grandi navi"; è notizia di oggi che dal primo agosto 2021 le grandi navi non potranno più entrare nel bacino di San Marco e nel canale della Giudecca, che diventano monumenti nazionali; attraccheranno invece a Marghera.
Una grande notizia per la preservazione di Venezia e della sua laguna.

Tonight I witness the passage of a cruise ship that seems to touch the swimming pool. Here in Venice there are two movements in conflict, the one that does not want the passage of large ships in the city because they represent serious danger as they cause a wave movement that threatens the very structure of Venice, as well as being a source of pollution. Then that of the merchants and artisans who fear a drastic reduction in their business without cruise ship passengers.
Finally the committee "No big ships" won; it is news today that the Italian government banned, from the first of August 2021, large cruise ships from passing through the center of Venice, declaring the surrounding lagoon a national monument. The cruise will dock instead in Marghera, great news for the preservation of Venice and its lagoon.

Oggi una grande folla di turisti ha invaso Venezia, è il momento di saltare sul gommone e fuggire in un piccolo borgo che è sempre un'oasi di tranquillità. Malamocco è uno dei siti più antichi della Laguna e nell'anno 742 proprio su queste sponde ha avuto inizio la favolosa storia della città di Venezia. Si trova nella parte meridionale del Lido di Venezia e in barca ci si arriva velocemente. Percorriamo il canale che lo circonda, quello che era l'antico porto, ed ecco il borgo che appare luminoso e così distante dalla frenesia di Venezia.
Today a large crowd of tourists has invaded Venice, it's time to jump on the inflatable boat and escape to a small village that is always an oasis of tranquillity.
Malamocco is one of the oldest sites in the lagoon, and in the year 742, right on these shores, the fabulous history of the city of Venice began. It is located in the southern part of the Lido of Venice and you can get there quickly by boat. We navigate the canal that surrounds it, which was the ancient port, and here is the village, appearing bright and so distant from the bustle of Venice.
Ormeggiamo e ci incamminiamo, nel silenzio risuonano le risate di un gruppo di persone sedute fuori da un bar; il ritmo di vita qui scorre lento e c'è il tempo di incontrare gli amici e raccontarsi storie per ridere insieme.
We dock and set off walking, the laughter of a group of people sitting outside a bar resound in the silence; the pace of life here flows slowly and there is time to meet friends and tell each other stories to laugh together.
Un'altra buona ragione per venire a Malamocco è una piccola trattoria, sempre affollata perché si mangia davvero bene. Ci dirigiamo lì, abbiamo prenotato i tavoli fuori, nella calletta e non vedo l'ora di assaggiare l'antipasto di pesce, poi fritto misto di pesce e un dolce che amo, qui lo chiamano Sgroppino, è gelato al limone a cui viene aggiunto il vino frizzante tipico di questa regione, il famoso Prosecco.
Another good reason to come to Malamocco is a small trattoria, always crowded because the food is really good. We head there, we have booked tables outside, in the "calletta", and I can't wait to taste the fish antipasto, then the mixed fried fish and a dessert that I love; here they call it Sgroppino, it is lemon ice cream to which the sparkling wine typical of this region is added, the famous Prosecco.

Torniamo a Venezia al crepuscolo, il momento in cui i rumori della città si attenuano, ogni cosa si riflette nello sciacquio dell'acqua che ha lo stesso colore del cielo. Luci e lucine si accendono e ondeggiano nello specchio delle onde. Sono gli attimi più belli questi, dove anche chi vive a Venezia si emoziona e ritrova il senso di vivere in una città così difficile:
We return to Venice at twilight, the moment when the noises of the city fade, everything reflected in the lapping of the water, which shares the exact same colour as the sky. Lights and little lights switch on and sway in the mirror of the waves. These are the most beautiful moments, where even those who live in Venice are moved, rediscovering the meaning of living in such a difficult city:

I giorni che precedono l’apertura del Festival del Cinema di Venezia sono già febbricitanti di preparativi e di attesa, si compilano elenchi con i film assolutamente da non perdere, si preparano i vestiti per le numerose feste che accompagnano l’evento.
The days leading up to the opening of the Venice Film Festival are already feverish with preparations and anticipation; lists are compiled of films absolutely not to be missed, and outfits are prepared for the numerous parties that accompany the event.

Poi, nei giorni del festival diventa molto difficile trovare un mototaxi e solo se hai la tua barca puoi spostarti da Venezia al Lido senza troppo stress ed evitare le resse sui vaporetti o le code ai motoscafi pubblici.
Then, during the days of the festival, it becomes very difficult to find a water taxi, and only if you have your own boat can you move from Venice to the Lido without too much stress, avoiding the crowds on the vaporettos or the queues for public motorboats.
Ogni giorno si discute con gli amici sui film visti il giorno prima e sulle recensioni apparse sui giornali. Il cinema invade tutte le conversazioni nelle case dei veneziani insieme a “le ciacole”, i pettegolezzi sulle feste a cui si è partecipato.
Every day we discuss with friends the films seen the day before and the reviews that appeared in the newspapers. Cinema invades all conversations in the homes of Venetians, together with “le ciacole”, the gossip about the parties attended.
Al di là degli eventi strategici per la vendita dei film e la corte di fans e seguaci che si muove con la macchina del cinema, rimane il cinema che vediamo sugli schermi e come diceva un grande maestro: “Non c’è nessuna forma d’arte come il cinema per colpire la coscienza, scuotere le emozioni e raggiungere le stanze segrete dell’anima.” (Ingmar Bergman)
Beyond the strategic events for the sale of films and the court of fans and followers that moves with the cinema machine, there remains the cinema we see on the screens, and as a great master said: "No art passes our conscience in the way film does, and goes directly to our feelings, deep down into the dark rooms of our souls." (Ingmar Bergman)

Se hai una porta sul Canal Grande, può succedere di alzarti un mattino e di trovare ormeggiata davanti al tuo portico un'imbarcazione cinquecentesca che trasporta il doge e il suo seguito.
If you have a door on the Grand Canal, it can happen that you get up one morning and find a sixteenth-century boat moored in front of your portico, carrying the Doge and his entourage.
Ti stropicci gli occhi, chiedendoti per un attimo se stai sognando, poi esci fuori e ti ricordi che è la prima domenica di settembre e che è iniziata la Regata Storica.
You rub your eyes, wondering for a moment if you are dreaming, then you step outside and remember that it is the first Sunday in September and that the Regata Storica has begun.
Tra le innumerevoli barche che partecipano alla Regata, la più bella è proprio questa davanti a noi, il famoso Bucintoro, che veniva utilizzato dai Dogi nelle cerimonie pubbliche.
Among the countless boats participating in the Regata, the most beautiful is this one right in front of us, the famous Bucintoro, which used to be used by the Doges in public ceremonies.
Il portico si sta riempiendo di personaggi vestiti con preziosi abiti di seta, qualcuno lancia occhiate curiose verso l'interno della casa, è facile sentirsi trasportati in un'altra epoca.
The portico is filling up with people dressed in precious silk costumes, someone casts curious glances towards the inside of the house; it is easy to feel transported to another era.
La regata storica parte da Sant'Elena, un quartiere situato nella parte est di Venezia, e percorre il Canal Grande fino alla stazione di Santa Lucia. Le premiazioni avvengono davanti alla maestosa Università Cà Foscari, dove viene costruito un palco galleggiante con delle tribune d’onore, la cosiddetta Machina.
The Regata Storica starts from Sant'Elena, a district located in the eastern part of Venice, and runs along the Grand Canal to the Santa Lucia station. The awards ceremony takes place in front of the majestic Cà Foscari University, where a floating stage with grandstands, the so-called Machina, is built.
Tra le bellissime imbarcazioni storiche veneziane, ma anche provenienti da altre città vicine, c'è un'altra imbarcazione antica da parata, è la Bissona "Cavalli", vogata da otto rematori in costume, fastosamente addobbata con sculture e intagli argentati.
Among the beautiful historic Venetian boats, as well as those from other nearby cities, there is another ancient parade boat: the Bissona "Cavalli", rowed by eight costumed rowers, lavishly decorated with sculptures and silver carvings.
Dopo la rievocazione storica, si svolge un' avvincente competizione di voga veneta, disciplina unica nel suo genere. Le gare sono otto, dedicate ai bambini, ai ragazzi e agli universitari che gareggiano nella sfida remiera tra università.
Le gare più seguite però sono quella dei campioni su gondolini a due remi e quella delle caorline, molto sentita dai veneziani, perché vede contrapposti 9 equipaggi provenienti da altrettante zone della Laguna. I vincitori vengono festeggiati come veri campioni e godono di un grande prestigio nella comunità fino alla successiva edizione.
After the historical re-enactment, a thrilling Venetian rowing competition takes place, a unique discipline of its kind. There are eight races, dedicated to children, teenagers and university students who compete in the rowing challenge between universities.
The most popular competitions, however, are those of the champions on two-oared gondolini and that of the caorline, deeply felt by the Venetians, because it sees 9 crews from as many areas of the Lagoon competing against each other. The winners are celebrated as true champions and enjoy great prestige within the community until the next edition.

I have found this ethereal diary describing the writer's experience in Venice written with the utmost accuracy of details. Some lines have particularly captured my attention making myself want to go back to this idyllic city which stands the test of time. On the whole the writer's descriptions is the quintessence of what Venice is, why this stunning city can always attracts millions of visitors who can experience, as I did once, all the magical atmosphere permeating it.
A galore of expressions used by the writer indeed do pinpoint the real soul of Venice.
No wonder Venice remains one of the very best places in the world people gravitate to.
