CONFINI — La scalata del Passo BOUNDARIES — Climbing the Pass
The journey continues. After my encounter with the shaman (which I told you about in my previous diary entry) I carry on along a road so narrow that, at times, traffic lights dictate who can pass through the single lane. I have no idea where I am; Mr. GPS has vanished from my phone screen, and I would love to reach Milan before night falls

I finally see a house and a man chopping wood, so I stop to ask for directions. He tells me I have taken the wrong turn, that I must go back and pass through Switzerland. I look at him thoughtfully; usually, when I lose my way, there is always something interesting to discover.
I ask him what lies at the end of the road I am traveling. Before answering, he looks at my car tires and says doubtfully, "The tires are good enough, but if there is snow you need snow tires, and besides, the pass might be closed." We look at each other in silence for a moment, then, losing his patience, he adds, "You are not planning to go up the Stelvio all by yourself, are you!"
Here we go again. Once more, the fact that I am traveling alone raises doubts in someone along my way.
I can feel his eyes following me as I drive away. A little further along, I discover that the pass will close in two days. It is a magnificent opportunity to climb the highest paved mountain pass in Italy, and the second highest in Europe.

I prepare for the adventure with a hot chocolate and a slice of cherry pie on the panoramic terrace of the only bar before the climb. From up here, the trees seem even taller and the glaciers closer.

Then the hairpin turns begin, leading toward the top of the pass at an altitude of 2,850 meters. As I climb, the surrounding world becomes more and more astonishing; the autumn yellows and ochres of the trees seem fluorescent next to the white of the glaciers and snow-capped peaks.

As you climb higher, the hairpin turns become narrower, and the woods give way to bare rock.

As soon as I find a turnout, I stop to contemplate the landscape. On one of these occasions, I chat with a couple of motorcyclists; it is their first time too, and they are thrilled. "There are eighty-eight hairpin turns," they tell me, asking me to take their picture, and they take one of me too.
The climb, whether because of the altitude or the excitement of being on top of the world, is having a strange effect on me: I am energized by an increasingly uncontainable happiness. I look down at the road I have just traveled; what a memorable adventure.

I tell myself, yet again, that we must always seek new paths to find the unexpected. We must dare to push beyond the boundaries awakening every sense toward discovery, change, and freedom. After all, isn't it emotion itself that makes us feel alive?

I am almost at the top now. Reds, whites, and blacks dominate the landscape.

Then even the red of the earth slowly disappears; I am on the peaks of the Ortler.

Arriving at the pass and the first crowds of people, I only want to go straight back down to find myself once more in the midst of that magnificent nothingness. Passing by, I glance at the shops, bars, mountain hut, and stalls—there is even a bank—but I do not stop for a moment. I want to hit the road again, this time all downhill toward Valtellina, with one eye on the road and the other on the wonders surrounding me.

Days like these are unexpected gifts; the beauty of the mountain, of the trees, of all nature, soothes, consoles, and gives hope. Here, far from the restless churning of human civilization, life proves to have meaning.

- Voluta all'inizio dell'Ottocento dall'imperatore Francesco II d'Asburgo
The Stelvio Pass has a long history:
Commissioned at the beginning of the nineteenth century by Emperor Francis II of Habsburg
Built from 1822 to 1825 by the engineer Donegani from Sondrio
Traveled by stagecoaches all year round until 1915; in winter, shovelers cleared the snow from the road.
In 1859, it became a border territory, and the Austrians built three fortifications along the climb of the eastern slope.
Summer skiing is practiced on the Livrio glacier; among the numerous ski schools, the most famous is the one founded by Pirovano, now owned by the Banca di Sondrio, which has the highest bank branch in Europe at the top of the pass.
Every year, on the last Saturday of August (or the first Sunday of September), the Stelvio National Park organizes the Bike Day: 12,000 cyclists travel the road, which is closed to all other means of transportation.

Brava.
